04 ::: Ambigrams

In class this week we discussed typography and the visual design of text-based communication. We looked at some examples of ambigrams including:

John Langon's ambigrams
Scott Kim's inversions

This week's design exercise should be an interesting challenge: try to design an ambigram! This will involve playing with the visual properties of the letters and the overall structure and potential for symmetry in the word(s) you choose.

PRACTICE ::: ADDY AMBIGRAM

FINAL ::: ADDY AMBIGRAM

PRACTICE ::: ADELINE AMBIGRAM

FINAL ::: ADELINE AMBIGRAM

This is the first ambigram I tried. I thought my nickname would be very easy to make into an amigram. It really wasn't!

After I realized the "A" needed to be turned the other way, I got my practice to work. Annie also showed me how the 'D' can be drawn to be capital letters in one view, then lower case in the other.

I used a calligraphy pen, then scanned it to obtain a digital image. I cleaned it up in Flash and also added motion.

The first practice was fun, I tried with my full name, Adeline. This one proved to be easier the second time around. I knew the A and the E (front and end) would be easy. The D and N proved much more challenging. After showing it to a few people, they suggested how to do the inner E and I.

The final was also written with a calligraphy pen and scanned. I cleaned this up in Flash and also added motion.
