06 ::: Space

This week's topic is the creation of space through visual design. Using the same 5-10 basic forms, create four separate visual sketches that create a sense of different kinds of space: flat space, depth, open space, and constrained space. You may vary attributes like color, brightness, scale, position, orientation, texture, etc.

FLAT

DEPTH

OPEN SPACE

CONTRAINT

I started with squares as my forms because they are so versatile. They can be turned into boxes, walls, rooms, objects...

I added color and moved the squares behind eachother to create depth.

For open space, I extracted the color fills. I wanted these boxes to hang like glass ornaments.

This is the second variation on the ornaments idea. By using perspective and scale, I turned each square around as if they are dangling. The positions of these squares are starting to resemble ornaments and the natural way they hang.

I use the rows of boxes below for contraint space, but by adding a horizon to the top half, I found it can also represent open space.

To illustrate contraint, I created a box or a room.

I took the box idea and set them in rows to show the contrained space between the boxes.

The above blue boxes didn't quite get the contrained feeling, so I changed the colors and increased the height. The result is something more onminous and constricting.
