08 ::: Time

This week's topic is the representation of time in visual communication. The novel Einstein's Dreams by Alan Lightman envisions a series of dreams that Einstein might have had about the nature of time as he worked on his theory of relativity. The dream vignette from April 16, 1905, describes a world in which time is like a flow of water. The goal of this week's exercise is to create a visual representation that conveys the sense of time as it is described in this short dream sequence.

Time is concrete yet relative depending on our geography. We exist in the same moment in time, yet it's different time for different people in various countries. When it's 8:00 AM in Atlanta, what time is it elsewhere? What are people doing?

The first photo is the beginning of my day in Atlanta with one of my favorite local breakfast joints, The Flying Biscuit. The successive photos are from other major cities and their times when it is 8:00 AM for me. I looked for photos that represent what I imagine what is happening there, what people are doing at the time I am drinking coffee and eating a greasy breakfast.

Geo-centric, I know. Sorry.
