Physical/Digital Puppetry

As emerging tangible interaction technologies enable digital information to weave its way more seamlessly into the physical world, our interactions with the virtual space can become correspondingly richer. As we move beyond button press and point-and-click interfaces, the physical design and aesthetic language of forms, materials and movements needs to be considered in concert with the design of the underlying technologies and information spaces. This course examines physical/digital co-design and physical computing in the context of an artistic performance practice. Digital artists have long explored the relationship between the physical and digital worlds through installation and performance pieces, and the spread of accessible low-cost DIY electronics and physical computing technologies makes this even easier today. The course provides an informal, hands-on and team-based learning environment, in which students work together to develop the conceptual, aesthetic and technical basics of physical/digital co-design through the creation of a physical/digital puppetry piece for live performance. The project will be realized in collaboration with students from separate courses in design, technology and representation and industrial design.
